Our town

Our village is the most beautiful gateway to the white village’ road of Cádiz.

Since time immemorial, from the top of its 100 meters high hill, has been watching over the countryside and the Serranía de Cádiz.

The Romans called it Arx-Arcis (fortress on the height), the Muslims Medina-Arkos. Under the rule of Ben Jazrum Arcos it became a small Taifa kingdom.

Twice the Christians took possession of the city: on September 29, 1255 and October 1264, when King D. Alfonso X El Sabio incorporated the city into the kingdom of Castilla.

Today from the Arab domination there only remain the labyrinth of narrow streets, the whitewashed houses, the castle and the Puerta de Matrera, entrance to the old town from the Barrio Bajo, the only one that still remains standing in the walled enclosure, guarded by a carving of the Virgin of the Pillar.

The Christians expanded the city outside the walls that encircled it, they built temples and other religious buildings (convents, asylums, chapels…) even only between the fifteenth centuries Arcos reached its maximum.

The Old Town of Arcos was declared a Historic-Artistic Monumental Complex by Royal Decree of March 1962, determined by the wall that existed and defined by the few remains that still remain of it.
